When asked “What is best health insurance for a family?” or “I need affordable medical insurance for my family… what’s the best plan? I always ask about the ages and size of the family. The insurance companies that offer health insurance to Connecticut families have different systems for determining their Connecticut Family Health Insurance rates. This can offer advantages and disadvantages for certain families.
Sometimes clients wonder why there is such a big price difference between different policies. I think we all get suspicious when two items of apparently similar value have very different prices. We wonder what the catch is. Usually there are lower benefits on policies that have lower prices. However there are certain situations where the difference in the premiums is based on their medical insurance pricing procedures. The way health insurance carriers calculate their rates can be different with different health insurance companies.
Best Health Insurance for Large Families
Large families will usually do best with Connecticare or Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. This is because they can charge the same rate for a family of 3 as for a family of 8. They base their family rates on the age of the younger spouse or the age of the parent when only one parent is insured. They consider a family policy to be one with 3 or more family members insured. Each family member is underwritten separately, but the rate will be the same for a very large family with as for a family of three providing the younger spouse is the same age.
Best Health Insurance for Families with a Significantly Older Spouse
Since Connecticare and Anthem BCBS base their rates on the age of the younger spouse, a couple where the husband is 20 and the wife is 40 will pay the same rate as a couple where both spouses are 20 years of age. This isn’t true of other companies. Therefore, these two companies often offer much better rates for these families.
Health Insurance for Children with One Parent
Neither Connecticare nor Anthem has a separate category for policies insuring only one parent. This means that a 50-year-old father and his 10-year-old son can pay the same rate as a 50-year-old man and his 50-year-old wife. In these situations, one of the other companies will usually offer a lower rate.
